How To Choose the Right Wedding Cake

By Rachelle Dawson

When you choose your wedding cake, you will likely consider factors such as the number of guests, availability and experience of the baker, and pricing. But the fun part is choosing exactly how you want your cake to look.

Consider The Shape

Cakes come in all imaginable sizes, but the most popular shapes for wedding cakes are circles, squares, and rectangles. Of course, a skilled baker will probably be willing to consider other shapes as well, perhaps hearts or hexagons.

Choose a Construction

The most popular type of wedding cake is the tiered cake. This construction allows the baker to combine multiple layers into a unified presentation. You may also choose a small layer with decorated cupcakes arranged around the cake.

Think About Your Favorite Flavors and Fillings

If possible choose more than one flavor. Most guests appreciate the chance to choose which kind of cake they would like. Basic chocolate and white cake remain crowd pleasers, but you may wish to consider other flavors, such as lemon or carrot.

Filling may take several consistencies. Frosting would have the same consistency, and probably the same flavor, as the icing on the outside of your cake. Mousse, as a whipped filling, would have a thicker and creamier consistency than regular frosting. A jelly filling would work well as a fruit-flavored filling.

Select Your Icing

Traditional buttercream icing usually has good taste and a soft finish. Fondant icing, on the other hand, tastes much blander but provides a smooth and elegant look to the cake. Although not hard, its consistency is stiffer than buttercream icing.

Decide What Decorations You Would Like

The baker should be able to incorporate fresh, silk, or icing flowers into the cake’s decoration. Some couples choose simple adornments such as stripes or ribbons. Many weddings showcase cakes that match their colors or theme. Some cakes also fresh fruits, such as strawberries, into their decoration schemes.

Whatever your budget, you can find a cake that fits your tastes by considering these variables. If you discuss these variables with the bakers or caterers you consult, you will have a great idea what the finished product should look like.
